3 benefits of going grain free
There are many different benefits that come from eating a grain free diet – and today I want to touch on three of them.
People always ask if I am against grains – and my answer is simple, no. Of course I’m not. This baffles people since I also like to teach on the benefits of eating a grain free diet.
Seems a bit contradicting, doesn’t it?
Well, to clear things up before I tell you three awesome reasons to go grain free, even just temporarily.
The human race has survived eating grains for centuries. Yes, that is a fact. Some people like to tell you that the human body isn’t meant to digest grains, but that isn’t true. What is true is that grains need to be prepared properly in order for the body to digest them properly and in order for your body to receive the full benefits of the nutrients contained in grains.
Do you just pop a handful of dried beans in your mouth and start eating? Um, no, that would be silly, not to mention painful. In order to enjoy the benefits of beans – you prepare them first and this is exactly what we need to do with grains. We can’t just grind a grain or berry (a full grain) and expect that we can eat it without an issue.
Another issue is the overall health concern with modern day grains. They are grown using chemicals, many are GMO and aren’t even real and others have been altered so much over the years that the make up of the grain is so vastly different than it was 200, even 100 years ago.
To that, I say if all you have is modern day, conventionally grown, GMO grains – it would be a great lifestyle change to ditch those digestive system wreckers and enjoy healthier foods!
Yet, if you have access to organic and heirloom whole grains – by all means, enjoy them in smaller quantities and as long as your system can handle them. Some of you may currently have issue with gluten and grains – and you would need to restore your gut and digestive system before pursuing a relationship with grains again.
For those of you who can eat them (like my family) – make sure you are choosing heirloom and organic grains to ensure you aren’t getting chemicals, gmo’s or altered grains. Then you’ll want to make sure you prepare them either through souring (think sourdough bread), soaking or sprouting. That’s for a different post, but know that there is a safe and delicious way to eat healthy grains.
Now, for the 3 amazing health benefits of going grain free – permanently or temporarily.
-
Weight loss. Since grains are metabolized into sugar, your body will use it immediately for energy. If you are constantly eating grains at every meal and for snacks, then you are always supplying your body with instant energy and it never needs to tap into any stored cells for energy. This is bad, because then you never burn stored fat. The other issue is if you have had a ton of grain products and it’s used for energy and then there’s extra, it will store in your cells as fat to be burned for later energy. So, if you are never letting your body burn that stored fat – you gain weight and have a really hard time losing weight. Going grain free will finally allow your body to go to that fat storage and use it for energy, resulting in weight loss.

Your digestive system gets a much needed break. Most people consumer conventional grains and therefore are taxing their digestive system every time they eat. Going grain free will give this system of your body such a wonderful break from working so hard to metabolize and break down hard to break down grains. This is a great time to do a little cleansing by consuming flaxseed and psyllium husk seed to start cleaning out your intestines and colon. This alone gives you energy, clears your skin and will allow for easier bowel movements.
